This book is the first theory and scale book for the 13th root of 3, better known as the "Bohlen-Pierce" scale. The Bohlen-Pierce scale is a non-octave scale, which replaces the equal division of intervals to the 2/1 (Octave) with the 3/1 (Tritave) ratio. This scale book was featured in the March 8-10th 2010 "Bohlen-Pierce Symposium" held in Boston by host and composer Georg Hajdu, and the Boston Microtonal Society. The book features over 200 notated examples of Bohlen-Pierce harmony and also features the triple 39-tone version of the Bohlen-Pierce scale.
Bohlen-Pierce is a scale first discovered by Heinz Bohlen and John Pierce in the 1970's. Two Decades later, Paul Erlich discovered the triple Bohlen-Pierce scale. The triple Bohlen-Pierce guitar was first built in 2010 for the symposium and features a truly amazing approximation to odd harmonics 3:5:7:9:11:13:15 with great accuracy. For an equal temperament the melodic and harmonic resources are another universe to be explored.
